Rev. Dr. Ahn Jae Woong

Senior Friend and known ecumenical leader Rev. Dr. Ahn Jae Woong was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Divinity by the Senate of Serampore College
CELEBRATED. Senior Friend and known ecumenical leader
Rev. Dr. Ahn Jae Woong was awarded the Degree of Doctor
of Divinity by the Senate of Serampore College, one of the
most distinguished universities in India. Ahn Jae Woong is
now president of the Seoul-based Korea Foundatin for
Working Together, an NGO aimed to generate employment
opportunities in South Korea

Our heartiest congratulations to Rev Dr Ahn Jae Woong, the well know Asian ecumenical leader from Korea, for being awarded the Degree of Doctor of Divinity by the Senate of Serampore College, one of the first institutions in India to be given the status of a university.

The degree was presented to him by Dr Kunchala Rajaratnam, Master and President of the college, at a convocation held in Tiruvalla in Kerala, India on 9 February 2008 “in recognition of his services to the Church and society.”

“The Senate and the Council of Serampore College heartily welcome Dr Ahn Jae Woong, among the honored and distinguished fellowship of graduates of the College,” read the citation presented to him.

 Ahn Jae Woong, 68, is the first Asian to be selected outside of South Asia to receive the doctorate of divinity degree from the Senate of Serampore College. It also honored the ecumenical leader by inviting him to deliver the annual convocation address. Speaking on the occasion, he said that “by this honor you have extended to me, you have also honored the Asian ecumenical movement.”

He is a former Regional Secretary of the Hong Kong-based World Student Christian Federation Asia-Pacific Region (1980-86) and its chairperson (1986-89) And the former general secretary (2001-2005) of the Christian Conference of Asia. He is already a recipient of the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the Mary Holmes College in the USA in 1993.

The Asian ecumenical leader was actively involved in the Korean democratic movement in the 1970s. He participated in the nationwide student demonstration against the dictatorial rule of Syngman Rhee and Park Chung Hee in Korea and was imprisoned and tortured four times.

Ahn Jae Woong now is the president of the Seoul-based Korea Foundation for Working Together, an NGO working for generating employment opportunities for less privileged Koreans in the country. He also serves as the Chair of the Dasomi Foundation, which works among the elderly in Korea, and a visiting professor at the Hoseo University, near Seoul.
