School for Ecumenical Leadership Formation (SELF) 2011

The SELF is a response to what was seen as a gap in the development of ecumenical leadership formation. It hopes to re-examine the causes of weakening and re-develop the scope of ecumenical leadership. As bi-annual leadership development project, the SELF targets frontline leaders of the SCM such as staff and officers aged between 22 to 35. SELF is an intensive 3-week program and an effective venue to train young ecumenist working closely with young people in the different parts of Asia and the Pacific. To date, we have trained more than 100 young leaders through the SELF Program, many of them are now actively working in their local churches, ecumenical institutions, NGOs and national movements and engaged in various ministries and programs. “Climate Justice: Young people working towards establishing ecological justice”

SET 2010November 28 to December 8, 2010
Colombo, Sri Lanka

The WSCF AP Student Empowerment for Transformation (SET) Program was organized last November 28 to December 8, 2010 at the EISD, Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Program was hosted by SCM Sri Lanka on the theme, “Climate Justice: Young people working towards establishing ecological justice in the world’s globalization process.” The program was attended by 20 participants and staff from the different movements in Asia-Pacific. The Program was also held back-to-back with the Ecumenical Assistance Program (EAP) Training, led by the Inter-regional Office. [read on]

The 5th School for Ecumenical Leadership Formation (SELF) Program was held from October 4 to 28, 2009 at the La Verne Mercado Ecumenical Center and Gems Conference Center in Metro Manila, Philippines, hosted by the Student Christian Movement of the Philippines (SCMP). Student Empowerment for Transformation 2008
“Young People Responding to the Challenge of Climate Justice”

The Student Empowerment for Transformation (SET) Programme was held from August 19-24, 2008 at Sun Cheon, Korea. The seven days training programme was hosted by the Jung–bu Church Presbyterian Church, and organized by the WSCF AP in collaboration with the Korean Student Christian Federation (KSCF). Twenty-five (25) students and senior friends representatives from the National SCMs participated in this program. They came from the following countries: Bangladesh, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Timor Lest, Myanmar, Australia, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Korea. [read on]

The 4th School for Ecumenical Leadership Formation (SELF) program was held from September 2 to 22, 2007 at the Ecumenical Institute for Spirituality and Development (EISD) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. With the theme “Young People Working Towards Wider Ecumenism in a Pluralistic Society”, the three-weeks intensive training was participated by young people coming from the member movements of WSCF Asia-Pacific (WSCF AP) and youth groups of the member churches and national councils of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA). Sixteen participants from the National Movements of Bangladesh, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Philippines, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan, Timor Leste as well as an intern from the Ecumenical Youth and Gender desk of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA), participated in this 10-day empowering programme. School for Ecumenical Leadership Formation 2005

The 3rd SELF 2005 was successfully conducted from September 11 to October 2, 2005 at the SCMI House and the Ecumenical Christian Center in Bangalore, India. The three-week intensive training hosted by SCM India was aimed at equipping the frontline leaders of the SCM with the necessary theoretical framework and practical skills to perform their duties and responsibilities as officers and staff of the national movements. [read on]

The Role of the Student Christian Movement (SCM)"

Jakarta, Indonesia

The SET 2004 was conducted by the World Student Christian Federation Asia-Pacific (WSCF AP) Region on 1-7 December, 2004 in Jakarta, Indonesia. 21 Delegates from 13 SCM member movements participated in this programme. They came from Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The School for Ecumenical Leadership Formation 2003 (SELF) programme was held in the Bangkok Christian Guesthouse, Thailand from 14 September - 8 October 2003. 13 SCM staff and ExCo members from the National Movements of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Aotearoa New Zealand, participated in this 25-day leadership training programme which is held once every two years. Student Empowerment for Transformation 2002
“Searching for Alternatives in the midst of Globalisation”

June 16-30, 2002
Philippines

This year’s SET programme explored issues surrounding alternatives to globalisation. “Searching for Alternatives in the midst of Globalisation” focused on the need to seek to critique the true meaning of globalisation and find for ourselves viable alternatives in our respective social, political and economic orders. This workshop was held at the University of Philippines, Los Baños in the Philippines from 16 to 30 June 2002. Delegates from 12 SCM member movements in the Asia-Pacific Region attended. The student delegates came from SCMs being: Australia, Bangladesh, Burma, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand. Also in attendance were: 2 resource speakers, 4 Filipino host committee members, 2 WSCF AP staff members and 2 Standing Committee members. [read on]

School for Ecumenical Leadership Formation 2001

SELF 2001July 15 to August 19, 2001
Chiangmai, Thailand

A thirty-five-day training program on ecumenical leadership formation was held July 15 - August 19 in Chiangmai, Thailand. It was jointly organized by WSCF AP and the Youth desk of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA). A total of 22 students and youth from 13 countries in Asia joined the program. [read on]
